International Union of Operating Engineers

The International Union of Operating Engineers is a trade union that primarily represents operating engineers, but also includes nurses and those working in the petrochemical industry. The IUOE, which was founded in 1896, has more than 400,000 members throughout the US and Canada. With nearly 140 unions, the IUOE is the 12th largest union in AFL-CIO.

The IUOE originally formed in December 1896 as the National Union of Steam Engineers of America. Eleven pioneering individuals met in Chicago to form this union after suffering through terrible working conditions, long hours, and no benefits. In 1928, the union became the International Union of Operating Engineers. Today, the IUOE aims to protect prevailing ages on public projects, alleviate healthcare costs and improve contractor competitiveness.
