International Union of Police Associations
Originally known as the National Conference of Police Associations (NCPA), the history of the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) began in 1954. During this period, the law enforcement profession was experiencing many changes and police officers were in need of support and services to assist them with collective bargaining and benefits. The union was founded for the purpose of representing the needs of law enforcement officers and support personnel, whether that be for better equipment, more staff, or a fair wage.
In 1979, the IUPA was granted an AFL-CIO charter, thereby allowing the law enforcement community to have their own independent voice within organized labor. The union has worked tirelessly to enhance the working and personal lives of individuals employed in the law enforcement field throughout the country. The IUPA currently represents law enforcement and corrections officers from Los Angeles to Boston, Minnesota to Florida, across the Mid-West, and Puerto Rico.
The IUPA has always been active in drafting legislation that impacts the lives of members, as well as the law enforcement and labor community as a whole. The union's legislative initiatives include the National Police Officers Bill of Rights, Fair Labor Standards Act for public employees, educational survivor benefits and armor vest grants. In addition, the IUPA recognized a significant need for officers to be covered legally, especially in the face of changing laws and the many challenges they face on the job. IUPA members benefits from a full service legal program that offers representation in matters related to grievance and disciplinary hearings, collective bargaining, job security, contract administration, and other legal issues related to the course and scope of duty.
