Office and Professional Employees International Union
Originally chartered as the Office Employees International Union (OEIU) in 1945, the union changed its name to the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) in 1965. This union is devoted to promoting the interests of professional, technical, and office employees throughout the United States and Canada.
With local unions in every state, the OPEIU is dedicated to helping its members secure better jobs, better pay and better benefits. OPEIU members work in a variety of industries, including banking and credit unions, hospitals and nursing homes, insurance, higher education, shipping, medical clinics, social services, utilities, transportation, manufacturing, hotels, offices and more.
Employees who join the OPEIU enjoy the protection of a legally binding contract, which they vote on along with their co-workers. In addition, members gain the right to negotiate with their employers over important workplace issues such as:
- Wages
- Benefits
- Retirement
- Employer policies
- Schedules and work hours
- Health and safety issues
- Job security
By 2001, the OPEIU had grown to 100,000 members. At over 125,000 members strong today with new members from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico joining regularly, the OPEIU is one of the larger unions of the AFL-CIO. OPEIU union members elect their own negotiating committee and decide on contract priorities. They also elect officers and leaders at the local and national levels.
