Service Employees International Union

The 2 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is the fastest growing union in North America, and its membership is among the most diverse in the labor movement. The union's history began in 1921, when members of seven small janitor unions formed a single organization, the Building Service Employees International Union (BSEIU).  The BSEIU changed its name to Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in 1968.

SEIU members are united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide. The union is dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society. It is focused on uniting workers in three sectors:

  • Health care
  • Public services
  • Property services

The SEIU is currently the largest health care union, with over one million members employed as nurses, doctors, lab technicians, nursing home workers, and home care workers. It is also the largest property services union and the second largest public employee union. By working with unions in similar industries across the globe, the SEIU challenges multi-national corporations to provide comparable wages and benefits and allow workers in every country the freedom to form unions. In addition, the organization has been a leading voice for immigration reforms that improve conditions for all working people in this country.
In fact, the SEIU represents more immigrant workers than any other union in the United States.

In 2005, the SEIU, along with 6 other unions, formed the Change to Win Federation. This new federation aims to unite non-union workers by industry and empower working people in the United States.
