The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is made up of more than 730,000 members across North America. IAM aims to provide service to community and justice at work by improving working conditions, benefits and wages.
In 1888, IAM was founded by a group of machinists in an Atlanta locomotive pit. Since then, the organization has accomplished many tasks to improve the lives of the working class. For instance, pay rose substantially for machinists who used to earn 20 to 25 cents per hour in 1888. In addition, in 1915, machinists began working 8 hours per day instead of ten, and in 1946, most IAM members were receiving paid vacations. Today, IAM is lobbying for affordable healthcare, economic recovery and fair trade.
