The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters
The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) represents more than 300,000 members across North America. With the motto “We Do It Right the First Time,” the UA aims to improve member skills through their variety of training programs.
Founded in 1889, the UA is one of the most successful trade unions in the United States and Canada. The UA acts as a voice for employees through negotiation and bargaining with employing contract groups such as the National Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors. The UA is also an important member of the Canadian Federation of Labour, the AFL-CIO and the Building Construction Trades Department.
The UA has been training pipefitters and pipe tradesmen longer than any other union. The organizations have top-notch training programs, including:
- Journeyman training organized instructor training
- Five-year apprenticeship programs
- Certification programs

UNION FACTS
- The UA is divided into four departments—Training, Organizing, Safety and Health, and Legistlative/Political Action.
- Members of the UA include pipe fitters, plumbers, welders, sprinkler fitters, steam fitters and heating and air condition technicians.
- The UA offers a five-year training program that is divided into one-year segments, comprising of at least 216 hours of classes and at least 1700 hours of on-the-job training.
- Chicago has produced the most general presidents of the UA.
