The United Brotherhood of Carpenters

The largest building-trades union, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters has more than a half million members throughout the wood products and construction industries. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters aims to recruit new members and train all current members in these fields. With more than 125 years of history, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters is dedicated to “improving lives through hard work, education and solidarity.”

Peter J. McGuire was one of the founding fathers of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. In 1881, he organized a Chicago convention to create a union, with representatives from 11 cities. They joined together to create a constitution and structure, establishing the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.

Both McGuire the UBC worked effortlessly and produced significant and long-lasting results. Their efforts led to:

  • The eight-hour workday
  • The founding of the American Federation of Labor
  • Labor Day
