Unite Here 275 7th Avenue New York, NY 10001
Unite Here
With 465,000 members throughout the United States and Canada, Unite Here represents workers in the food service, airport, gaming, hospitality, laundry, manufacturing and textile industries. Unite Here includes a diverse membership, including people from immigrant countries and a large number of Latino, African American and Asian American workers. In addition, most members of Unite Here are women.
Unite Here values the democratic principles that past generations sacrificed to support their families and. In fact, the Union’s constitution invokes "the power, dignity, and independence that only democratic trade unionism can bring to the unorganized and dispossessed."
Unite Here was formed in 2004 after a merger of UNITE (Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees) and HERE (Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union). UNITE was a labor union that formed in 1995 to represent textile, apparel and laundry industries, while HERE formed in 1891 on behalf of those in the hospitality industry. One year before the merger, both organizations worked together on the Yale strike, the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride and the H&M organizing campaign. Today, Unite Here works to turn traditionally low-paying careers into better, family-sustaining jobs.
