United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is a large and diverse union representing more than 500,000 active members throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The UAW represents a variety of workers including those in state and local governments, colleges and universities, multinational corporations, small manufacturers and hospitals.

Since its beginnings in 1935, UAW strives to create innovative partnerships with employers to negotiate fair wages and benefits for its members. UAW members have benefited from a series of breakthroughs, such as:

  • Extensive training and education courses
  • The first cost of living allowances
  • Paid health insurance for industrial workers

UAW credits some of its success on the connection between active and retired members. The majority of UAW’s nearly 600,000 retirees stay involved in the union, participating in the UAW’s community action program and retiree chapters.

The UAW commits itself to enhancing the lives of the working class and establishing economic and social justice for workers. In the past, the UAW has involved in the Civil Rights Movements, campaigns for the Fair Housing Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Today, the UAW continues to fight for worker rights and a new approach to international trade that enhances the quality of life for all people.
